Letter: Too many questions on Question 2 — vote ‘no’

Portsmouth voters:

Do you have questions about ballot Question 2 (senior center) on the Nov. 2 election? I certainly do!

Why did the Portsmouth Town Council omit any mention of CCHC in the wording of ballot Question 2?

Why did the Portsmouth Town Council appoint a focus group to study the senior center issue and then allow them to meet in secret with no minutes published or residents allowed to attend?

Why did the board of directors of the senior center (also on the focus group) refuse to have a board election in both June 2020 and June 2021, contrary to their own bylaws?

Why has senior center board chair, Helen Mathieu, refused to have a members meeting to discuss this issue and get a sense of whether our members were in favor or against the ballot Question 2?

Why did senior center board member John Brady say that CCHC was going to “arrange” a grant for the condo? Grants are very competitive. Mr. Belden does not have a signed lease, and has stated in the public hearing that CCHC can not raise funds until they have a signed agreement with Portsmouth. Mr. Rainer was recently quoted in the Portsmouth Times saying the agreement with CCHC “is not set in stone!”

Why did Linda Ujifusa say that people “involved” with the center she has spoken with are in favor of this plan? At the June 2021 senior center members meeting, the majority of the those in attendance were not at all receptive to anything she had to say on this issue. Do you remember that while campaigning, Linda Ujifusa said that she would help the residents adversely effected by the wind turbine?

Where is Representative McGaw on this important issue? The senior center and many seniors are in her district, yet she has been mute on this issue!

Why did the Portsmouth Canvassing Authority send out a referendum explanation document with false and misleading information on ballot Question 2?

Until we receive honest answers, join me and vote “no” on Nov. 2.
