The Mt. Hope High School golf team suffered its first loss in six matches to date when the Huskies teed it up at Rhode Island Country Club with Portsmouth against the home side from Barrington in an Eastern Division outing Wednesday afternoon, April 15.

The host Eagles improved to 6-0 after they carded a team total of 153 strokes. Mt. Hope dropped to 5-1 after posting a 168. Portsmouth dropped both decisions with a 173.

Barrington sophomore Mitch McTaggart was the day's medalist, finishing even over the par 36 front side at RICC. His sister and senior Claire McTaggart shot a 39 while another Eagle to break 40 was Kevin Arruda with a 38. Junior Jake Nocon was low for the Patriots, also carding a 38.

As for the Huskies, seniors Jackson Howland and Luke Domina each shot 39s from the top of the Mt. Hope playing order. Freshman Logan Ferreira finished with a 42. Seniors Braeden Clark and Brennan McLaughlin each shot 48s, one of which counted towards the Huskies' team tally. Mason Kachapis shot a 53, which wasn't included in Mt. Hope's overall score.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
