Ferne B. (Major) Waite, 77, passed away peacefully in her Portsmouth home on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020. She was the wife of the late Albert A. Garcia and Lewis Waite.

Born in Attleboro, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Dorothy (Bellrose) and James Major.

Ferne loved to cook. She cooked for everyone. Seeing them eat her food brought her great joy. Over the years she was the owner/operator of a few Rhode Island restaurants, including Ann’s Kitchen in Warren, R.I. and Ann & Marie’s Fish & Chips in Providence, R.I. Ferne loved animals, especially her dog Baily, who was by her side all the way.

Ferne is survived by her children: Louann Lawrence (Antone III), Lisa Varney, and Roberta Aylsworth (David) who she considered her adopted daughter; her grandchildren: Peter Varney, Jr., Antone Lawrence IV (Elizabeth), Christopher Lawrence; her great grandchildren: Nathaniel and Genevieve Lawrence; and her sister Gloria Maglio (Joseph).

In addition to her husbands and parents, Ferne was also predeceased by her son William J. Benoit and her siblings: Charles B. Major, Janice J. Major, John Dias and George Dias.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, inside St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., Bristol, R.I. Visiting Hours and flowers are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name can be made to Southcoast Hospice and Palliative Care at 200 Mill Road, Fairhaven, MA 02719.
