East Bay girls hockey team destroys Mounties 10-3

Regional team is 10-2 heading into playoffs

The East Bay girls' hockey team is in playoff mode after crushing Mount St. Charles 10-3 at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Arena last Thursday. And with just two regular season games left, the 10-2 Eagles are in second place in the division and hold a four-point lead over Burrillville/Bayview Co-op (8-3). Their only two losses of the season came against first place LaSalle.

First line center Kat Barker scored four goals in leading the Eagles' offensive assault on Mounties goalkeeper Amelia Lambert as the team peppered her with 44 shots.

Barker, a junior from Mt. Hope, scored back to back goals in the second period. She beat Lambert with a wrist shot from in front of the net for her first tally, assisted by line-mates Maddie Cornell and Sarah Yee, to make the score 6-1 with 10:09 left in the period.

Her second goal came less than a minute later. She gathered the puck in the Eagles' zone, threw the puck off the boards to get around a Mounties defender and streaked on a break away to the net and beat Lambert with a backhanded shot over her shoulder to the top right corner, to make the score 7-1. Barker used her blazing speed and quick hands to add two more break away goals in the third period.

“Kat makes plays and gets goals,”  co-captain Ella Hanley of Mt. Hope said. “She’s huge at breaking the puck out of our zone when we need that breakout. She back checks and covers on defense. She’s an incredible all around player that we really love to have on our team.”

Yee, a sophomore from Barrington, scored two goals for the Eagles. She scored the Eagles second goal of the game, assisted by Maeve Harrington, to give East Bay a 2-1 lead with 9:25 left in the first period. Yee scored again, in the second period to make the score 5-1.

Harrington, Peyton Whittet, Taylor DeFreitas and Alexis Malnerich each scored a goal for the Eagles during the onslaught.

Harrington

The team is 6-0-1 since its loss to LaSalle in mid-January. Since then the Eagles have had two significant changes that bolstered their lineup and have the team excited and primed going into the playoffs.

Barrington senior Maeve Harrington, out with an illness since the beginning of the season, has returned to the lineup to play winger on the second line with Marissa Levreault and Peyton Whittet.

“Maeve got a goal and a couple of assists,” said Eagles head coach Michael Cox. “She came back a few weeks ago and we have to get her going. That was her first goal tonight. She’s been playing great. We’ll need her to be ready in the playoffs.”

Levreault, a junior at Portsmouth, said that her line missed Harrington. “I feel that we’ve gotten so much better from the point when Maeve came back,” Levreault said. “We were nervous for her at first. But she’s a fighter. She wanted to play and she’s made her spot. She came back better than ever.”

The second line generated two goals against the Mounties, one each by Harrington and Whittet. Levreault assisted on both goals.

After the game, Coach Cox named Levreault, ‘player of the game’ in the locker room.

“You just got to put what you have out there and you got to fight,” Levreault said.

Yee for more offense

After his team’s second shut out loss to LaSalle, coach Cox looked for ways to generate more offense. He found it by moving Barrington sophomore Sarah Yee from defense to first line winger with Barker and co-captain Maddie Cornell.

“We needed offense,” said coach Cox. “We moved Sarah from defense to forward. That helped us out big time. It’s the best move that I’ve made yet. She’s given us an offensive punch.” The first line scored six goals against Mount.

“Sarah is the aggressiveness that we need on offense,” said Hanley.

“We are doing amazing,” Yee said of the line’s play. “I thought I’d be rusty. But Maddie and Kat have helped me get it together.”

Yee’s sister Sam, a freshman, is filling in some on defense now.

“She’s small, but she’s tough and she knows what she’s doing. It’s a good move to have her back there,” Yee said. Her father, Neil Yee, is an assistant coach for the Eagles.

“He’s definitely very tough on me and my sister,” Yee said. "But it’s good to have someone so supportive and can give good feedback and get me on track.”

New defense

Barrington freshman Mallory Cox moved from forward to defense to take Yee’s spot on D.

“Mallory has played defense before. She knows what she’s doing. She’s been strong for us,” said Hanley, adding, “It’s the first year that we’ve had depth on defense.”

Currently the defense rotation consists of Hanley, Cox, Sam Yee and Layla Rappleye. But Hanley knows if things go south during the playoffs, she could end up seeing a lot of ice time.

“Depending on what happens (during the game), depending on who we’re playing, I have a history of being on the ice for almost 45 minutes a game,” Hanley said with a laugh, “But, It’s good to have four D and that’s what we are going to try to do.”

Next up

The team has two important league games left against third place Burrillville/Ponaganset/Bay View co-op on Thursday and sixth place Moses Brown/Coventry/Smithfield co-op on Sunday. Then the team plays the Cape Cod tournament on the following weekend before beginning the playoffs.
