A Bristol man died late Monday afternoon after he collapsed while walking in the water at Grinnell's Beach in Tiverton.

Police Chief Patrick Jones said the 50-year-old man was walking with his girlfriend at around 4 p.m. when he apparently went into medical distress and collapsed in shallow water. Several people at the beach pulled the responsive man from the water.

Tiverton police arrived and the man was transported by ambulance to Saint Anne's Hospital in Fall River where he was pronounced dead later that day. His identity and cause of death have not been released.

Grinnell's Beach is located off Main Road at the south end of Tiverton Basin by the Stone Bridge fishing pier on the Sakonnet River.
