Verity Carlisle Smith of Dedham, Mass., beloved husband, father and friend, died on April 10, 2017, at the age of 94. He was raised in West Roxbury.
After serving in the Army in World War II, he graduated from MIT. Mr. Smith’s career as a chemical engineer focused on designing and selling water purification systems, ultimately founding his own company. He served 55 years on the Board of Fire Prevention Regulations and close to 40 years on the board of Associated Early Care and Education, Inc. (renamed Nurtury).
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Anita Wilder Smith, and his six children, V. Brooks TotlebenSmith; G. Taylor Smith and his wife, Michelle; Carlann M. Welch; Nathan C. Smith and his wife, Natcha; Margo H. Rush and her husband, Kevin; and Jennifer R. Wieting and her husband, Carl. He leaves three stepchildren, Pieter Van Slyck and his wife, Marie; Katrena Hartwig and her husband, Ted; and Derek Van Slyck.
He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Will, Emylee, Peter, Curtis, Josh, Jonathan, Marshall, Sophie, Eva, and Neena. He is survived by his sister, Janet Gross. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marcia McKee Smith; his parents, John Verity Smith and Hattie Hyland Smith; his sister, Rosamond Busboom; and his daughter-in-law, Kristin TotlebenSmith.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on May 6 at 12:30 p.m. at the First Parish Church, 842 Tremont St., Duxbury.
