Looking to buy a home in Tiverton? You couldn’t do much better than Fogland Farm — but it’ll cost you a cool $5.95 million.
The historic 84-acre farm, which traces its roots back to well before the American Revolution, is on the market for the first time in nearly 50 years. The sale includes the circa 1730 main home, two additional homes that date to the turn of the 20th century, a large horse barn with an indoor rink, a smaller barn, and a host of equestrian facilities, blueberry orchards, open fields and stone walls.
The farm has been owned by just three families over its 295 years. One of the original owners, Col. John Cook, served in Newport’s Second Regiment during the American Revolution, and the property later passed into the hands of Newporter William Bateman in 1819. He kept the property in his family for more than 150 years until it was purchased by Bernie Taradash, now 92, and wife Geri, in 1977.
The Taradashes had a lot to contend with when they purchased the property, and Bernie assumed carpentry duties to restore the aging main home. In an interview with Fortune Magazine, he said the work was daunting — the couple went from “crisis to crisis,” and he said that if he had to do it over again, “I wouldn’t.”
“It was a more overwhelming experience than I realized. but once committed, you can’t turn back.”
Listing agents Liz Kinnane and Cherry Arnold are handling the property and refer to the farm as a “a piece of New England Heritage.”
