Sandywoods resumes live music every other Sunday

Posted

Live music is coming back to Sandywoods, more than two years after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the end of the center's popular open mike.

Long-time emcee Gary Fish of Little Compton said he has worked with the art center's management and is bringing back the open mike on Sunday, May 1. From there, the open mike will be held the first and third Sundays of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. Anyone is welcome to show up and play, and each performer gets three songs.

Fish, who ran the open mike for years, said he was sad to see it go and still remembers the last time one was held:

"I sure do," he said. "March 10, 2020. It was packed tight that night. I decided to wipe the mikes off and I said, 'I can't do this anymore.'" He had hoped to re-start the open mike last summer, "but then we had the uptick (in caes) and it didn't happen."

Sandywoods has brought tables and chairs back in, and the venue is ready to go.

"I'm really excited to have it back up again," said Fish. "It's been too long."
