PHS freshman wins girls’ long jump by over 7 inches

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ and girls’ track team notched four, first-place finishes at the Eastern Division Championships held Sunday at Barrington High.

Loosaper Tate, competing in her first outdoor track season as a PHS freshman, dominated in the girls’ long jump. Her best leap of 16 feet, 8 inches was more than 7 inches longer than that of her nearest opponent. Tate also took fourth place in the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 1:04.18.

Portsmouth’s star distance runner, junior Sean Gray, won the boys’ 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:47.58 — more than eight seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Senior Allie Kaull won the girls’ 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:20.25.

Another first-place finisher was senior Tristan Thomas, who won the boys’ pole vault with a best effort of 12 feet even.

Other results

Here are some other standout performances by PHS athletes on Sunday:

• The girls’ 4x400-meter relay team took second place with a time of 4:30.74.

• The boys’ 4x800-meter relay team took second with a time of 8:36.31.

• Rowan Snyder came in second place in the pole vault with a best effort of 9 feet, 6 inches.

• Braden Coyle, a sophomore, took second in the high jump with a best effort of 5 feet, 10 inches.

• Emily DeConto, a junior, took third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.96 seconds. She also came in fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.45 seconds).

• Junior Sonia Staroscik came in third in the triple jump with a best leap of 32 feet, 7.5 inches. She came in fifth in the high jump (4 feet, 7 inches).

• Owen Gervelis, a senior, came in third in the triple jump with a best leap of 38 feet, 8 inches. 

• The boys’ 4x100-meter relay team came in third with a time of 45.65 seconds.

• Ayden Gleeson, a senior, took third in the boys’ hammer throw with a best toss of 181 feet, 10 inches.

The Class Championship is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, at Portsmouth High.
