PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School unified basketball team is off and running.

The Patriots opened the season with back-to-back wins, edging Tiverton, 55-53, at home on March 17 before taking down Barrington, 62-54, on the road Tuesday.

With a 2-0 record, Portsmouth has set an early tone heading into the heart of its schedule.

The Patriots return home Tuesday, March 31, for a 3:30 p.m. matchup against Mt. Hope.

The rest of the regular-season slate — all Tuesday games starting at 4 p.m. — includes April 7 at Middletown, April 14 at Rogers, April 28 at Tiverton, and May 5 at home against Barrington.

The playoffs begin the week of May 11, with division championships scheduled for May 16.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
