Portsmouth tops Tiverton, Cumberland to start season

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Patriots varsity baseball team got its season off on the right foot with back-to-back wins on Saturday and Monday. 

In a non-league game against Tiverton Saturday at home, Damon Owen pitched the Patriots to a 4-1 victory. The righty surrendered one run on four hits over four innings, striking out six. Oliver Rey and John Mass entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Kyle Rogers took the loss for the Tigers. The righty lasted six innings, allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out seven and walking none.

Portsmouth smacked one home run on the day: Nick Spaner rounded the bases for an inside-the-park home run in the third inning.

Spaner led the team on offense, with two hits in three at-bats.

Cayden Rego went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Tigers in hits.

On Monday, the Patriots knocked in six runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 10-2 road win over Cumberland. The offensive firepower by the Patriots was led by Damon Owen, Casey Cord, Oliver Rey, Caleb Banks, and Emmett Greenwood, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Portsmouth got things started in the first inning, when Greenwood singled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs.

The fourth-inning rally was led by singles by Banks and Greenwood, a triple by Charlie Cord, an error on a ball put in play by Owen, and a double by Rey.

John Mass earned the victory on the mound for the Patriots. Mass lasted four innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out nine. Rey, Cam Ruggieri, and Greenwood all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.

Michael Bradshaw took the loss for Cumberland. The pitcher allowed seven hits and eight runs over three and a third innings, striking out three.

Portsmouth totaled 12 hits. Banks, Greenwood, Mass, and Charlie Cord each had two hits for Portsmouth.

Portsmouth was scheduled to to return home to face Coventry on Wednesday, April 12. The team travels to South Kingstown on Monday, April 17, before hosting Smithfield on Wednesday, April 19.
