Portsmouth swept by Burrillville on Senior Night
Broncos win battle of 15-1 teams in D II-B volleyball
PORTSMOUTH — The Burrillville Broncos avenged their lone regular season loss to Portsmouth earlier this month by sweeping the Patriots on their own court during Senior Night on Monday.
The two teams, which came into Monday’s matchup with identical 15-1 records and a chance clinch first place in Division II-B volleyball, last faced each other on Oct. 1 in Burrillville, when the Patriots prevailed, three games to two.
It was all Burrillville at the Portsmouth High School field house on Monday, however, as the Broncos came away with a resounding victory. They won all three games in the best-of-five contest, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15.
For Portsmouth, Meghan Lehane had eight kills and seven digs, while Celia von Recum had eight kills, three aces and five digs.
The loss dropped the Patriots’ record to 15-2 going into their final regular season match with Scituate on the road tonight, Oct. 29.
Despite the loss, Portsmouth is still sitting pretty in the standings and should enjoy a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Burrillville is now 16-1 and sites atop the division.
