BARRINGTON — The Portsmouth Patriots varsity softball team notched its first win of the season in impressive fashion last week, routing Barrington on the road, 11-0.

Portsmouth scored three runs in the third inning, two in the fifth, and six in the seventh and final inning. 

Sophomore Mary Rainey pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout. She struck out six Barrington batters and walked three.

Mia Ruggieri hit a home run and notched four RBI on two hits. Rainey and Kaelyn Mahoney each had three hits and an RBI; and Megan Malone had two RBI and two hits. Maggie Lauder added three hits. Eight of the nine Patriots players crossed the plate at least once.

The Patriots are now 1-4 in Division II.

The Patriots were scheduled to play West Warwick on the road on Tuesday, after the Portsmouth Times’ deadline.They return home on Thursday, April 27, for a 4:30 p.m. game against Middletown, before hitting the road again to play East Greenwich at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 1.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
