Portsmouth shuts out Barrington, heads to state semifinals

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School football team braced the elements Friday night en route to a 15-0 shutout win over Barrington in the Rhode Island state quarterfinals.

Portsmouth quarterback Kyle Bicho threw for two touchdowns in the win.

“As expected. Barrington is a tough, tough team,” said Patriots head coach Ryan Moniz. “For the first time I was nervous for a full week of practice, especially with a lot on the line. You could tell on film that Barrington had gotten much better throughout the season, as have we. They finished the season out strong.”

The first quarter didn’t see much action offensively as both teams struggled to move the ball up the field. The was a quick pace of play as each team used the run game partially due to the harsh wind conditions that circled the field.

“It wasn’t so much the cold as it was the wind,” Mr. Moniz said.

Still, it was cold enough for the PHS Marching Band, citing potential damage to certain instruments, to cancel its halftime show.

Barrington moved the ball effectively through the start of the second quarter. Part of the reason due to this was the two-headed monster of Eagles running backs Ethan Singer and Samuel Read, who chewed up more than half of the clock in the game’s second quarter.

With under two minutes to go in the first half, Bicho threw a touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Brian Hamilton, putting the Patriots up 8-0 after the two-point conversion attempt was caught by sophomore Ethan Tutt to end the half.

Portsmouth got right back to scoring late in the third quarter, when Bicho threw a 45-yard score to wide receiver Peyton Robinson, putting the Patriots up 15-0 heading into the fourth quarter, which was scoreless.

Semis against La Salle

Portsmouth moves onto the Rhode Island state semifinals in a matchup against La Salle Academy on Friday, Nov. 12.

“We’re just excited to be able to play December football and hopefully compete for a Rhode Island state Super Bowl,” said Mr. Moniz.

With the loss, Barrington’s season ends with a 3-5 record. Head coach Sandy Goram said he was proud of the way his team battled back throughout the year.

“I think this was a microcosm of our season. Our talent level had fallen off but we were able to regain it, and I’m proud of the way our kids competed,” he said.
