Lady Patriots’ outstanding season comes to an end

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High girls’ varsity basketball team held Ponaganset to just 44 points — one of the Chieftains’ lowest-scoring efforts all year — in their Final Four matchup on Saturday night.

But as good as the Patriots’ defense was at the University of Rhode Island’s Ryan Center, Ponaganset’s was even better. The Chieftains beat Portsmouth, 44-31, and would go on to win the R.I. Interscholastic League’s state championship the following day, nipping Moses Brown in overtime by a score of 57-54.

Saturday’s game was the third time the two teams have met this year, with Portsmouth’s defense improving steadily through the course of the season.

In the regular season, the Chieftains had no problems with Portsmouth, beating them 54-30 on Jan. 30. In the Division I quarterfinals, Ponaganset held off the Patriots for a 45-40 win.

Portsmouth, which had upset No. 3-seeded Barrington in the quarterfinals, 49-39, came into Saturday’s matchup as the No. 6 seed. The Chieftains were seeded No. 2.
