Patriots lose game in final minute

PORTSMOUTH — It was a battle of champions.

In this corner, visiting Barrington — last year’s Rhode Island Division I girls’ lacrosse champions.

And in this corner, Portsmouth — last year’s Division II champs.

The Patriots moved up to Division I this year and have had mixed success so far. They were 2-3 coming in to Thursday’s home game against the Eagles.

But they showed plenty of fight against Barrington in a thrilling, back-and-forth match that ended with an Eagles goal in the final minute to give the visitors a 13-12 win. Anna Lombardi led Barrington on offense with seven goals and two assists.

The Eagles’ win improved their record to 5-1, while the Patriots dropped to 2-4.

It was the third one-point loss in two weeks for Portsmouth. The Patriots dropped a 14-13 decision to East Greenwich on April 17, and lost to Lincoln School by a score of 17-16 on April 6.

The Patriots will his the road to play Moses Brown on Monday, April 24; La Salle Academy on Friday, April 28; and South Kingstown on Monday, May 1. They’ll return home on Thursday, May 4, to play Lincoln School.
