PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Patriots girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams both took two out of three in a dual meet Monday afternoon over the 3.1-mile course at Glen Park.
The girls, who are defending their state title despite losing several key seniors, defeated both Tiverton and East Providence in the team competition, with identical scores of 15 to 50. They lost to the meet’s winner, La Salle Academy, 19 to 38.
The best finisher among the Portsmouth girls was Sabrina Leary, who came in fourth in a time of 21 minutes, 32 seconds.
The Patriots’ Abby Gilpin came in sixth with a time of 22:13, followed by Kitty Damon (seventh), 22:14; and Ryan McNeilly, (ninth), 22:29.
All the other runners in the top 10 were from La Salle, led by Kaylie Armitage with a time of 18:51.
The boys’ team defeated Tiverton, 17 to 44; and East Providence, 15 to 50. The squad fell to La Salle, 24 to 32.
The top boys’ runner for Portsmouth was Ben Chase, who took third place with a time of 16:53.
He was followed by Brennan Seibert (fourth), 18:04; Kaden Kluth (sixth), 18:15; and Joe Hook (eighth), 18:21. The other runners in the top 10 were all from La Salle, led by Jack McLoughlin and Tyler Chambers with identical times of 16:32.
Next meet
The PHS girls’ and boys’ teams will next face Barrington, Shea and Tolman at Barrington High School at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23.
