PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ varsity indoor track team finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Dwyer Division after its regular season ended on Jan. 8.
The Patriots finished with a 10-1 record in the division — the same as Toll Gate and La Salle Academy.
The PHS girls’ team also had a fine season, finishing with an 8-3 record in the Dwyer Division.
Some of the track athletes also competed in invitational meets over the weekend, with outstanding results.
Lucy Tate, a freshman on the girls’ team, competed in the long jump at the World Trophy Invitational in Providence, placing fourth overall with a best leap of 17 feet, 1.5 inches. That set a new school record and qualified her for the freshman long jump at New Balance Indoor Nationals on March 13.
Several athletes also competed at the Yale High School Classic in New Haven, Conn. over the weekend, with a few of them putting in stellar performances in the 3,000-meter race.
Allie Kaull placed 13th out of 127 competitors with an indoor track personal record of 10:37.94. Chris Vachon placed 55th out of 200 competitors with a lifetime PR of 9:26.58.
And, Sean Gray placed seventh with a time of 8:41.75, an indoor PR for him, and a new PHS indoor track school record. He is currently battling through an achilles strain and will take the next few weeks to heal up before the final championship meets of the season.
The teams’ next meet is the Dwyer Division Championship on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
