TIVERTON — Tiverton police, using social media and working with Dartmouth police and other departments in the area, are searching for the man who pulled off an early morning bank robbery Monday at the Bank Newport branch located at 614 Main Road in Tiverton.
At 9:21 a.m., just after opening,” said Tiverton Police Chief Patrick Jones, the suspect entered the north end branch of the bank, and passed a note to a teller at the back, saying it's a robbery.
"He threatened her with a weapon; just a threat, no weapon was shown," said Chief Jones.
An undetermined amount of money was handed over to him, and he fled, said the chief.
Surveillance film of the robbery "was posted on social media within minutes," indicating the man shown was a "person of interest," Chief Jones said.
The man may be a suspect in another robbery, in Dartmouth, he said.
From what is known about the Tiverton back robbery, the suspect "is pretty brazen. No mask, no gloves," Chief Jones said. "We're talking about armed robbery. He's clearly on a tear. What has been said on social media," he said, "we're taking all that into account."
Armed bank robbery, Chief Jones said, "that's the highest level of theft you could possible go. You're looking at possible jail time in the double digits, if proven."
"What struck us," Chief Jones said, "was he made no attempt to conceal his identity. That gives us grave concern." For this, among other reasons, the suspect should be considered very dangerous, said the chief.
There are no other known Tiverton incidents involving the suspect, Chief Jones said, but he may be a person of interest in other crimes elsewhere, including one involving theft of a purse from an elderly woman in Dartmouth.
Anyone with information or information as to the identity of the suspect is asked to call the Tiverton Police Detectives at (401) 625-6717 or email dmartin@TivertonPoliceDepartment.com
