BRISTOL — East Providence resident Mark Simonson, a cook’s helper at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 904 (Council 94) member, was recently the recipient of AFSCME’s Never Quit Service Award.

Mr. Simonson, a former Navy radioman, was trained as a nursing assistant, but switched roles several years ago to become a kitchen aide.

He is noted for his desserts, which he decorates and presents to residents with great fanfare, as well as for playing old time jazz or pop tunes during dinner.

The 61-year-old is currently taking advantage of AFSCME’s Free College Benefit through Eastern Gateway Community College, earning a degree in business health care management. Though he could retire, he plans to keep working until at least 66.
