Tuesday, Dec. 31

Cheryl A. Kohane, 52, of 306 Long Highway, Apt. 2, was charged with three counts of simple assault and/or battery, five counts of making crank or obscene telephone calls, and one count of disorderly conduct, after police were called to a disturbance at her home at 2:13 a.m. Police wrote in an incident that when they arrived they were met by two men, who were there to retrieve the belongings of one of the men who had been living there, when they found his room vandalized. When entering the residence, the men said that Kohane became aggressive, used homophobic slurs and was verbally abusive. Kohane later let the police come in to retrieve the man’s belongings. Kohane, who was sweeping the floor when officers came in, allegedly refused to put a broom down when asked, and entered the kitchen to empty the dust into the trash. When officers informed Kohane that she had an active bench warrant open against her, she allegedly began to resist as she was cuffed and placed in a cruiser. There, officers wrote, she continued to be verbally aggressive, making derogatory remarks about the men’s sexual orientation. In addition, she claimed the officers sexually harassed her and had no right to arrest her. At the police station, police said Kohane remained uncooperative. Police said she was subsequently injured after striking her forehead while being escorted to a holding cell. She was transported to Newport Hospital, where police said she continued to make homophobic remarks and threatened to assault one of the police officers.
