In the lower corner of my laptop it says we are in the ninth month, i.e. September! How can that be? Of course if I look out on the back 40 I see it is covered with a yellow blanket of three kinds of golden rod, and the arbor on my lawn is covered with the white, sweet scented fall Clematis (or at least that is what I call it) and nearer are the wiry stems of Jerusalem Artichokes topped with little sunflowers. When the petals drop the Goldfinches will have a feast.
From time to time young deer will stand on a shaded path that I can see from my window seat, driving my little hunter into fits of barking. The deer just stands there, wondering where that noise is coming from. I am told they don’t see very well, so eventually he/she turns and walks away or goes into the walled garden to eat my low growing lavender asters.
Just because it is getting cooler — thank goodness — that doesn’t mean the Hummingirds are heading south, so for at least another month keep their feeders filled and free of mildew.
