Letter: Regarding GOP comments on school committee race

Posted

I would like to address the concerns raised by Mike Rocha II, the Republican Town Committee chairman, as reflected in last week’s Sakonnet Times ("Gonzalez exit leaves questions on school board race").

Mr. Rocha questioned the appropriateness, when Amy Gleicher is elected, of Amy and her husband Mark serving together, which aims to undervalue their reputation. As evident by their involvement and commitment to the school and to the Little Compton community, Amy and Mark have shown themselves to be ethical and dedicated. I must reiterate that The Rhode Island Ethics Commission investigator, Gary Petrarca, found no conflict of interest. I worry that Mr. Rocha’s concerns may be interpreted as truth, which they are not.
Amy and Mark are ideal neighbors, always there to help shovel the snow from a walkway or share a cup of milk in a pinch. Beyond that, they have become my friends. They have time and again proven to me that they are of the highest integrity and live a life of honesty, kindness and decency.

Furthermore, in our many conversations over the past six years, it has become evident to me that Amy and Mark, while clearly understanding right from wrong, are independent people capable of making choices based on following their individual moral compass.

I expect the town council to approve the re-certification of Mark Gleicher on October 10 and I trust my friends, neighbors, and community to elect two highly qualified candidates, Amy Gleicher and Sue Chase, to the School Committee on November 5.
