Letter: Reclaiming our democracy: ‘Of, By, and For the People’

To the editor:

At the conclusion of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address reminded us that we are a “government of the people, by the people, for the people” — a democracy powered by citizens and dedicated to the public good. Today, that vision faces severe challenges. Wealthy special interests distort the public’s will, gerrymandering allows politicians to choose their voters, and the theory of a unitary executive risks consolidating unchecked power.

This November, we must exercise our civic responsibility to elect a new Congress. With a rising cost of living, soaring national debt, and a shortage of affordable health care and housing, our votes will shape the future for generations.

There is so much noise and concern about election integrity today. If you have questions or doubts, get real answers — and then vote. Do not let loud campaigns, misinformation or deep pockets dictate your choices. Tune into debates, research candidate platforms, and verify that they have actionable plans to address your family’s needs.

Treat this election as a hiring decision. If your current representative is not delivering results, fire them. If a candidate demonstrates leadership and practical solutions, hire them. The majority of Americans want results-oriented problem-solvers — not ideological warfare or partisan theater. It is time to elect leaders who prioritize lowering costs, reducing health care expenses, and addressing immigration fairly.

Congress must work for the people, and we must do our part to send the right leaders there. Vote like the future depends on it, because the well-being of your family, friends, neighbors, country and the world certainly does.
