To the editor:

Birds are leaving the feeder. And the light has changed. It’s not daylight savings, mind you; the light simply changes one day, each fall and spring. If you’re quiet, you’ll see. The cukes are by, and the last tomatoes just hang on. Our New England asters haven’t bloomed, and I wonder if something’s wrong. 

It’s silent this hour before dinner, before the ... uh ... Red Sox. But something’s wrong. You can feel it, if you listen. Something. Perhaps our Mother.

I’ve always believed in Gaia; that the Earth is an organism that will correct itself. But does that include us?

And are we plain damn out of time? Is it too late to show Our Mother we love her? But then, of course, She knows.
