To the editor:
On February 22, the Little Compton Town Council unanimously approved entertainment license applications from Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards that will permit 28 events to occur there over 11 weeks this summer. Such events, weddings and concerts, come with traffic, roadside trash, amplified sound, inappropriate parking and lighting, all of which directly affect the neighbors of the vineyards and, for all of us, the low key, rural character of our town.
This is just the beginning. The decision of our Town Council opens the door for anyone who owns farmland to turn her or his property into an entertainment venue.
It is up to us now. This is a pivotal moment. If we are going to protect the rural, non-commercial nature of our town, we will have to do that with private funding. It’s now or never.
We have contributed more than we can afford to the Little Compton Legal Fund, PO Box 232, LC 02837. Citizens need to take a stand for Little Compton
