Trained as a teacher, she lived to help others

Jane Marie (Conrick) Dyer, 86, of Bristol, RI, passed away Friday, October 8, 2021, at East Gate Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, East Providence, RI.

She was the wife of Charles Joseph Dyer, to whom she had been married for 62 years.

Born in Fall River, MA, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Josephine “Jo” (Brogan) Conrick.

Jane was a graduate of Warren High School, Class of 1953, the University of Rhode Island, Class of 1957, and Rhode Island College, Class of 1980, where she received her Master’s in education. She had worked as a teacher in Newton, MA and Berkley, NJ.  She had previously lived in Mendham, NJ, Barrington, RI, Warren, RI and Little Compton, RI. She had volunteered with many organizations for the developmentally disabled, including the NJ Brain Injured Children, the Barrington Special Education Committee, the RI Disability Law Center, Bristol County Chapter for Mentally Retarded Citizens, RI Chapter for Autism, and the Groden Center.  Jane was an only child, who cared for her elderly parents and relatives and her husband’s mother and aunt.  Jane was a Communicant of St. Mary of the Bay Church in Warren.

It was her selflessness for which she may be best remembered.  She was always thinking of others, always helping others.  Her kind, gentle spirit will be missed but lives on in the hearts of people she touched.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Paul Edward Dyer of Dania Beach, FL and Kevin Joseph Dyer of Providence, RI; a daughter, Mary Jane Dyer and her husband Christopher Riley of Hopkinton, MA; and two grandchildren, Mariela Dyer and Aleah Riley.  She was the grandmother of the late Andres Alarcon.

Arrangements are by Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where relatives and friends will be received on Friday, October 15, 2021, from 4 to 7 pm.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 9 am from Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Mary of the Bay Church, 645 Main Street, Warren.

Burial will follow in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery, Vernon Street, Warren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Groden Center, an organization which supports individuals of all ages with autism; or Stepping Out, which provides social activities for young adults with special needs. Either can be sent to the Cove Center at 610 Manton Avenue, Providence, RI 02909.
