Designer's dream takes shape in Tiverton

Boston interior designer Mattye Dewhirst building the house of her dreams on Main Road

Maybe you’ve noticed the whimsical home currently under construction at 2649 Main Road in Tiverton. Here’s a little bit more about it from owner Mattye Dewhirst, a Boston interior designer who plans to move in when construction wraps. She purchased the 2.69 acres on which the home sits in October 2019 and is thrilled to see the finish line on what’s been a long-time dream.

About the house: “I’ve always been into design, even as a kid, and was always OCD about weird design quirks. I would draw for hours. I grew up in a farmhouse and there was a house down the street from us that had a mansard roof. As a kid, I always tried to draw it. I guess that was the inspiration for (my house), way back when. I just like the Second French Empire style, so I bought the land and started fiddling around” with the design.

About the home: “I designed everything completely by myself, then when I was done I gave the prints to an architect friend and he did the plans.”

Why Tiverton? “My parents live in Bristol and my brother and his family live on the East Side of Providence. Driving back to Boston after some Sunday family dinner is such a drag. I just wanted to live somewhere a little further from the hustle and bustle, and since I work from home I don’t really need to be in downtown Boston. So I was looking for something, originally, that was halfway between and this just sort of happened.”

When did construction start, and when do you plan to move in? “It started around February, or March. Hoping (to move in) May-ish (of 2024). I don’t have any strict deadline.”

Excited? “Yes! For years this house only existed in my imagination. Watching it become a reality is such a trip.”
