Alice Norris Neel Hagan, 76, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday September 4, 2019, surrounded by family. A resident of Durham, NC, and Tiverton, Alice was a copious reader, ambitious chef and avid gardener. She had a rich intellect and broad interests, from colonial architecture to classic cars to heirloom dahlias.

An art lover and film enthusiast, she was known for her generous correspondence and prodigious article clipping.

Alice lived in Little Compton for many years where she enjoyed summers at Warren’s Point. She was born in Bryn Mawr, Penn,, on November 28, 1942, to Henry Shoch Neel and Bessie Ebbs Norris. She attended The Agnes Irwin School and Rhode Island School of Design where she received a BFA in Textiles in 1965. Alice went on to have a singular career that lasted more than 40 years and helped define the landscape of American interior and industrial design.

Alice was a bright light who was deeply admired and respected by her many friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, John; her sister, Cynthia Neel of Valley Forge, Penn.; her step-brother, Robert Pollock of Monument, Col.; her son Brooks, and daughter-in-law Julie of Little Compton; her grandsons Asa and William — and her beloved poodle, Jaime.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
