CRANSTON — The East Providence High School football team got a win it needed to have as the Townies chase a spot in the upcoming Division I playoffs after the locals blew out host Cranston East, 39-0, at a windy Cranston Stadium Friday night, Oct. 11.

East Providence scored all six of its touchdowns on the ground, including its first three courtesy of burly back Juan “Cinco” Diaz. The senior, No. 5 on the E.P. roster, scored off rumbles of 34, 42 and 15 yards in the opening half as the Townies built a commanding 26-0 lead by the break. Freshman Jahad Davis Pinto also ran for a 16-yard TD in the second period.

The same combo accounted for the other two East Providence touchdowns, both coming in the third quarter. Dias notched his fourth score with a 20-yard run while Davis Pinto plunged in from one yard out. On a difficult evening for kickers, Davonte Symonds booted just one of three extra points. Quarterback Justin Pena connected with Alex Rodriguez on a conversion pass for the Townies’ other two points.

East Providence returns home to Pierce Memorial Stadium Friday night, Oct. 18, to face Shea in another league game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The 3-1 Raiders are coming off a 21-7 win over Barrington last week. Shea also has wins over Cranston East and Cumberland.
