The East Providence girls basketball team held off a late comeback to beat Mt. Hope 43-38 in a Division 2, away game, on Monday night. The Townies victory broke a two-game skid as they improve their record to 4-2.

East Providence led by as many as 11 points and went on a 12-2 run to start the game, before having to hang on to win in the fourth quarter. Forward Trinity Provencher led the Townies in scoring with 12 points. The junior guard started the game hot, scoring 8 points in the first quarter as the Townies took a 10-2 lead. She also grabbed 6 rebounds as did center Audrey Benard, who scored 2 points during the game.

“Trinity has incredible athleticism and continues to showcase remarkable defensive and rebounding skills,” said Townies head coach Tammy Drape. “The whole team contributed to the victory. We passed the ball well and played solid defense down the stretch.”

The lead didn’t last for the Townies however, as Huskies center Emily Moran scored 7 second quarter points to cut the lead to 19-18 at halftime.

The Townies also received scoring from Harmonie McDowell, Katherine Amado and Zarae Hall as Provencher cooled off in the second half. Amado, a sophomore guard, kept the Townies in the game by draining a pair of 3-pointers in the middle quarters for 6 of her 10 points.

Kat is a player who can shoot well from beyond the arc, which significantly impacts the team's ability to score,” said Coach Drape.

McDowell, a senior swing guard, also netted a 3-pointer and sank a pair of free throws in the third quarter for 5 of her 9 points.

“Harmonie possesses a unique ability to remain calm under pressure, making her a reliable leader in clutch moments during games,” she said.

East Providence took a 30-24 lead after three quarters, but again had to sustain a Huskies run as Lily DaSilveira scored 7 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter. Sophomore guard Zarae Hall countered for the Townies scoring 7 of her 9 points in the final frame. Amado, Provencher and McDowell also chipped in with 2 points each.

Zarae’s court vision is unparalleled,” said Coach Drape. “It allows her to anticipate plays and make split-second decisions that often lead to scoring opportunities.

EP scoring:

Trinity Provencher scored 12 points, Katherine Amado scored 10 points, Zarae Hall and Harmonie McDowell each scored 9 points, Audrey Bernard scored 2 points and Nadiyah Calouro-Yargas scored 1.
