Townies girls' tennis team off to hot start in 2026

The East Providence girls' tennis team remained undefeated after toppling Cumberland 6-0 in a home match last Wednesday afternoon.

As of the Post's press deadline on Wednesday morning, the Townies were 5-0 at the top of Division II after defeating Chariho, Middletown, Westerly, Cumberland and PCD/SRA. East Providence has dropped just two of 34 games in that span.

“We knew that we were going to have a good group this year,” said Townies head coach Slade Sharma. “This talented group had been waiting for their opportunity to play. They’re one of the most optimistic groups that I’ve been around and their making the most of it.”

The Townies singles players all won straight set victories during their match against Cumberland. Townies senior Sydney Olson crushed Cumberland’s Kiru Kurbec at first singles, 6-1, 6-1. Olson went 16-1 last season playing fourth singles and is currently 5-0.

“She’s the real deal,” Sharma said of his co-captain. “She is a consistent power player and for team’s that were used to playing against Abby Ellison at first singles and thinking they now would have an easier time with her graduated, Sydney is proving that’s not the case.”

Townies second singles player Megan Pita, a junior, pasted Cumberland’s Addison McCurley, 6-1, 6-2.

“Megan stepped up from first doubles last season,” he said. “She is a consistent, all-around player that can cover the court.”

Senior Madison Luu beat Culberland’s Gayathri Rajesh, 6-2, 6-3 at third singles. Luu, a senior, has been a stalwart at third singles the last three seasons.

“She a veteran at that position with a lot of career wins under her belt,” Sharma said.

Townies fourth singles player Maura Roche, a junior, blanked Cumberland’s Evi Mumm, 6-0, 6-0. She is currently 5-0.

“Maura played third doubles last season. She’s tall and super athletic. She can cover the court and she doesn’t wear down,” said Sharma. “She was raw as a singles player coming from doubles, but she’s figuring it out fast.”

Doubles teams also dominated

The first doubles team of Addison Flanagan and Chloe Sullo beat Cumberland’s Amelia McCarthy and Erin Taylor 6-3, 6-0. Second doubles team of Talia Gould and Addison Tait beat Ainsley Bonds-Harmon and Mia Leach, 6-0, 6-0. The third doubles team of Mazie Baraf and Abigail Mendo were on their way to beating Maddie Casavant and Avery Carr 6-3, 5-2, before the match was called due to rain.

Coach Sharma also mentioned that senior Eliana Perez, a strong singles player that transferred from PCD, will be eligible to play towards the end of the month.
“She's a really talented player,” he said. “She’ll be in the mix as a starter for us as soon as she's ready to play.”
