The third place Townies improved their overall record to 8-2 in the Eastern Division. They also placed well on Saturday at the Classical Classic state meet qualifier, where the 4x400 relay team, consisting of  Julian Monteiro, Elijah Bento, Julius Cortes, and Justin Jardine, won gold and broke the school record.

Pawlik won the 200-meter sprint and the triple jump. On Saturday, the sophomore beat a larger field at the Classical Classic in the 100-meter dash. He placed second in the 200-meter dash and he was part of the 4x100 relay team that placed second at the classic.

During Monday’s meet, Gilliard placed first in the 100-meter dash, Jardine placed first in the 400-meter sprint, Silva won the long jump, Monteiro took gold in the 110 and 300 hurdles, Beaudet placed first in the pole vault, Francis won the shot put and discus, Logan took gold in the javelin and Precious placed first in the hammer throw.

Jardine, Monteiro, Zack Moreira and Will Massey placed first in the 400-meter relay.

During the classic,  the 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of Pawlik, Jardine, Elijah Bento and Julius Cortes placed second. Bento placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. The 4x800-meter relay team of Massey, Gerry Gagnon, Will Anthony, and Daniel Lukusa placed seventh.

Townies girls also win big at the dual meet

The Third place East Providence girls also beat Tiverton 113-26 and Mt. Hope 99-47 to improve their Eastern Division record to 9-2, even while some of their best athletes rested after the Classical Classic on Saturday.

Distance runner Katie Patalano won the 3000-meter run and the 800-meter run. Sadie Gagnon won the 1500-meter run. Abby Raphael won the 400 meter run and sprinter Kendra Daniel won the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.

Trinity Johnson Carter won the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles at the dual meet on Monday and finished second at the Classical Classic on Saturday. Ryley Souto placed second in both hurdles races during the dual meet. Layla Bates placed third.

I'm just going to keep working hard and keep working on my technique and fundamentals,” Johnson said. “We're all trying to work hard and just you know keep pushing forward and stay together as a team.”

Weight throwers and relay teams win too.

Wendy Monteiro won at shot put. Whitney Monteiro won at hammer, and Adriana Perry won at javelin and discus.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Abby Raphael, Layla Bates, Kendra Daniel and Ryley Souto won gold and also won the 100-meter relay as well, while standing in for their resting teammates.

“The 4x400-meter relay team of Raphael, Bates, Souto and Gionna DosSantos are ranked fourth in the state,” said head coach Mike Almeida.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Nazarae Phillip Kandace Daniel Gionna DosSantos and Ryley Souto placed third at the Classical Classic on Saturday.

“They have the potential to be state champs,” Coach Almeida said. “They are .6 seconds off the pace of first ranked Moses Brown. With some better passes they could definitely place top three or better at states.”

The 4x800-meter relay team of Katie Patalano, Abby Raphael, Layla Bates and Sadie Gagnon rested at the dual meet after placing second at the Classical Classic. They are currently ranked second in the state according to Coach Almeida.

“Individually, Phillip Kendra Daniel and DosSantos are all ranked top 15,” he said. “They could be huge factors at the State meet in June.”

Both teams will compete for gold at the Eastern Division meet on Saturday.
