Townies clip Cumberland, head to soccer quarterfinals

Posted

The East Providence High School soccer team shut out Cumberland 3-0 in a Division 1 preliminary playoff game at home on Monday night.

The 9-4-4 Townies move on to play at North Kingstown in the quarterfinals on Thursday night at 6 p.m. East Providence hadn’t beaten the Skippers at home in 14 years until earlier this season when they shut them out 2-0 on Sept. 16.

“They will be ready and it will be a battle,” said head coach Tim Calouro. “The Skippers have only let in 8 goals all year.”

East Providence sophomore midfielder, Jared Amaral, put the Townies up 1-0 in the first half, beating Clippers goalkeeper Lucas Marques with a header, assisted by senior Nigel Fernandes.

The Townies added two more goals in the second half. Fernandes beat Marques on a penalty kick after senior striker Damian Monteiro was taken down in the Clippers goal box, to make it 2-0. Monteiro later booted the ball by Marques to give East Providence a 3-0 lead. His goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Kason Taveras.

Townies goalkeeper, Kayke De Campos, was stellar during the game, making 12 saves to earn his third clean sheet of the season.

Coach Calouro named junior central defensive midfielder Colby Jerzyk the player of the game.

“He has continued to impress,” he said. “Colby creates opportunities and makes tactical plays to set us up for success.”
