Three Townies teams head into playoffs on high notes

Posted

It was an exciting night for Townies sports on Tuesday, as the softball, baseball, and girls lacrosse teams all notched victories against their opponents on their home turf at East Providence High School.

Both the baseball and softball teams secured close victories against North Kingstown and Moses Brown, by scores of 2-1 and 9-7 respectively.

Tyler Dicecco threw a gem for the Townies, striking out seven and only allowing four hits and one earned run. The varsity baseball team, back in Division 1 for the first time since the 2022 season, finishes the season at a respectable 12-6 overall (10-6 in league play), good enough for sixth in the division and earning a playoff spot.

They will play a home playoff game against either Cranston West or Westerly on Saturday (time TBD), depending on the outcome of a game against Barrington and Portsmouth.

Girls lax goes undefeated
Perfection is a hard thing to come by, but the East Providence girls lacrosse team now knows what it feels like as they capped off a dominant 2025 season with a 15-7 win over St. Mary Academy Bay View, who unfortunately finished the season on the other end of the spectrum (going winless, 0-15, on the year).

The Townies ran away in Division 3 from any competitor, going a perfect 15-0 (13-0 in league play), with 215 goals and only giving up 82 goals against in total. That +133 differential was multitudes better than the next closest team, Smithfield, who had a +48 goal differential going into their last game of the year (after press time). Smithfield only has three losses on the season — all coming at the hands of East Providence, and only by a combined four goals. It seems likely those teams might be seeing each other again in the coming weeks.

Dylan Flynn had four goals in the match, Alyssa Karalekas chipped in three goals, Ava Soares Katherine Almeida and Maggie Robinson all pitched in two goals apiece, and Sophie Carreiro and Kloey Iacavone had one goal each. Goalie Ava Williams made 7 saves on the night.

“This season has been so memorable for our team, going undefeated and spending so much time together,” said senior Kloey Iacavone. “We are closely bonded this year, going from tanning in the sun together before practice, to battling on the field, and of course getting ice cream after. As a very driven team, we are heading into the playoffs with confidence and a hunger for the championship title.”

Girls softball breaks slide
The 9-7 win over Moses Brown broke a four-game skid for the East Providence softball team, which now sits at 8th in Division 1 play at 8-7 (8-9 overall), with one game to go in the season against Coventry (happening after press time). As of press time (Wednesday morning), they sit in the 8/9 seed and will face Westerly in the first round of the playoffs.

“In our initial matchup against Westerly, the game was a nail-biter with constant lead changes, and we narrowly lost 10-7. This upcoming game is definitely within our reach if we come prepared and perform at our best, both defensively and offensively,” said head coach Katie Solitro. “We will be relying significantly on our pitchers, Cassandra Dulude and Marianna Pina, who have consistently excelled for us throughout the season. Our batting will need to be effective to match Westerly's offensive strength. Overall, I have confidence in this team and their capability to compete fiercely in close games. This is a dedicated, team-oriented group that genuinely cares for one another and for the game. I hope that their energy and resilient ‘never give up’ attitude will carry us deep into the playoffs.”
