Stolen artwork appears 'for sale' online

Rare photograph located in Warwick pawn shop

An expensive photograph that went missing from a Barrington home two years ago was listed for sale on ebay recently.

A woman who lives in California and owns a home in Barrington told police she purchased some Leila Jeffreys photographs about two years ago and shipped them to her house in town. Police said that one of the photos — it featured an owl — went missing shortly after it arrived in town.

Recently, the woman received an email from artist's husband; he said she should use a better picture of the photograph while listing it for sale online. The woman said she was not selling the photograph, and in fact, had not seen the photo in about two years since it went missing.

The woman then contacted ebay, informing the site that it was listing stolen artwork for sale. She also contacted Barrington Police, which began investigating. Detectives discovered that the stolen photograph was being sold by a Warwick pawn shop. Police went to the shop and spoke to the owner, who identified the man who had sold the photograph to him; that individual told the store owner that he had purchased the artwork at an estate sale. The shop owner paid $100 for the photograph and, after doing some research, listed the artwork for sale at $1,900.

Police have seized the photograph and are still working to track down the man who sold the piece to the pawn shop.
