SEEKONK — A woman was struck and killed in Seekonk while walking with her young son in the early evening hours of Thursday, Sept. 12, in a hit-and-run incident on Newman Avenue/Route 152.

After a brief search, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced law enforcement had found and arrested the driver, 27-year-old East Providence resident Jeremy Schmidt.

Mr. Schmidt was scheduled to be arraigned Friday, Sept. 13, in Taunton District Court on charges of leaving the scene-death resulting, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lane violation.

The Seekonk Police Department announced it began receiving 911 calls at approximately 6:54 p.m. Thursday informing of a pedestrian having been hit by a vehicle, which had left the scene and continued northbound on Route 152.

Upon arrival, police and Seekonk Fire/Rescue personnel found the victim, a 37-year-old female. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she was later pronounced dead due to the injuries as a result of the incident. The child was uninjured.

The striking vehicle was described by witnesses as a light-colored SUV, possibly a Jeep Grand Cherokee, between the years of 1999-2004.

Rhode Island State Police arrested Mr. Schmidt around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning. He has a prior, similar incident on his record, leaving the scene of an accident in 2014.
