Riverside sweeps Martin in middle school hoops outings

EAST PROVIDENCE — It was a double dip of hoops action between the city’s middle school teams earlier this week as the four Martin and Riverside basketball squads met each other Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 14. In Riverside, the host and unbeaten Vikings defeated Martin by a 67-54 score in the boys’ outing.

After leading by just seven at intermission (36-29), Riverside pulled away in the second half. Trey Rezendes III led Vikings with a game-best 21 points. Xavier Hazard added 17 and Skyller Garcia chipped in 11. Franklin Lopez paced the Wildcats with 16. Levi Jacobs added 15 and Brandon VanWagner eight. Riverside improved to 9-0 at the time while Martin slipped to 6-3.

At Martin, the guest Vikings made it a sweep of the day for their side as RMS beat Martin, 56-34, in the girls' game. The Vikings broke open a relatively close 19-10 affair at the break, scoring 37 second-half points. Breena Hannon netted a game-best 24 for the Vikings. Ariana Ingram had 12 and Estrella D’Ambra had 10. Harmonie McDowell chipped in eight. Zoe Clark led Martin with 13 points. Alasia Fontaine added 10 and Hailey Vieira six. Riverside improved to 6-2. Martin fell to 2-7.
