EAST PROVIDENCE — The Riverside Post 10 Junior Division entry into the Rhode Island 19-20 Elite Baseball League improved to 8-2 with a 5-0 victory over host Scituate 1 Wednesday night, Aug. 5.

Jack McKnight was the winning pitcher, going five shutout innings on the mound. Brandon Landry finished off the win with two spotless frames.

The locals actually began this week with an 11-6 victory over Scituate 2 on the road at Ponaganset High School Monday night, Aug. 3.

Riverside scored three in the top of the first inning, but the hosts got two back in the bottom of the frame then took a 5-3 lead after three complete. Post 10, though, erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to reclaim the lead for keeps. The locals batted around during the onslaught and later added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the victory.

Mike Sabourin started the game on the mound for Riverside and picked up the win, throwing four innings allowing three earned runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked one. Dylan Palombo threw 1-2/3 innings of relief while allowing two hits and an earned run. Xavier Botelho got the save after recording the final four outs, three via strikeout. Botelho entered the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of sixth with the bases loaded and proceeded to end the threat with a K on three pitches.

McKnight was the offensive standout for the locals, driving in three runs on two hits. Botelho, Grayson Sparr and Jacob Palumbo each had two RBI. Tim Robitaille started the six-run rally in the fifth with a one-out single. McKnight drove in two during the spree with a single.

Last week
Two nights after suffering the same fate at the hands of Post 14/88 Upper Deck, Post 10 returned the favor on its opponent from Cumberland with a 13-3, Mercy Rule victory at Pierce Field Wednesday night, July 29.

McKnight tossed a complete-game effort for the locals, needed 63 pitches in five innings while allowing just one earned run, striking out three and issuing a pair of free passes.

McKnight was also one of the hitting stand out for Post 10, going 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in one. Botelho plated four runs for the locals while going 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and a walk. He also scored twice.

Sparr ended the game in Post 10’s favor with a two-run, walk-off single in the home half of the fifth. The base hit plated Kyler Lorenz and McKnight with the deciding tallies. Batting leadoff, Lorenz scored three times after drawing three walks and adding a base hit.

Riverside scored three times in the bottom of the first then added four more in the second and another three-spot in the third to build a commanding 10-0 advantage. Cumberland scored its three runs in the fourth, though only one was earned due to a wild pitch and a throwing error afield.

Upcoming schedule
Barring anymore weather delays, Riverside was slated to complete its regular season schedule over the next week with additional games this week, including a split bill doubleheader at home Friday night, Aug. 7, at Pierce Field beginning with a contest against Gershkoff-Cranston at 5:30 p.m. followed by return visit against Warwick at 7:45 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 10, the locals play at North Providence High School against Smithfield-North Providence and Tuesday, Aug. 11, Riverside is home at Pierce against Scituate 1. First pitch for each game is set for 5:30 p.m.
