Riverside hosts quarterfinal game at Pierce Field August 12

EAST PROVIDENCE — The Riverside Post 10 Junior Division entry into the Rhode Island 19-20 Elite Baseball League completed its slate with an 11-2-1 record and with a little help on the final night of the regular season secured first place in the standings and the commensurate top seed in the playoffs.

The locals went 3-0-1 over the last week, including an 8-3 win over Scituate 1 Tuesday night, Aug. 11, at Pierce Field. The victory coupled with a 15-1 loss by second-place Upper Deck-Cumberland to Howard Rogers Pawtucket Post 25 the same night propelled Post 10 atop the league standings.

Playoffs

Riverside readied to face eighth-seeded Scituate 2 in the opening round of the postseason Wednesday night, Aug. 12. First pitch is 5 p.m.

The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the playoffs are single elimination. The championship round will be a best-of-three series beginning Friday night, Aug. 14, with a doubleheader.

As the top seed, Riverside will host all its games at Pierce Field as long as it remains in contention. Follow Post 10 in the EBL playoffs daily at eastbayri.com.

The rest of the playoff bracket is as follows: second seed Upper Deck vs. seventh seed Warwick; third seed Pawtucket vs. sixth seed Gershkoff-Cranston; and fourth seed Scituate 1 vs. fifth seed Smithfield-North Providence.

Regular season finale

Billy Roche made the start for the locals in the 8-3 regular season finale decision against Scituate 1, going four inning and allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts to earn the first pitching victory of any kind at any level in his young career.

Tim Robitaille and Andrews, both just eighth graders, impressed on the mound while finishing off the win throwing one scoreless inning each.

Early in the contest, Lorenz and McDuff reached base and later scored the first runs, respectively, for Post 10 following a sacrifice bunt by Barber and a sac-fly by Santos.

With the score tied at two, Roche, as part of a six-run outburst by the locals, gave Riverside the lead for keeps by doubling home Santos in the bottom of the fourth.
