Barrington woman says she paid $6,000 for new furnace, but EP man never did the work

Posted

On Friday, Feb. 7, East Providence police notified Barrington police about a man who had allegedly taken money to replace a Barrington resident's home heating system, but never completed the work.

East Providence officials said they had charged Anthony DeBarros with obtaining money under false pretenses after he allegedly bilked 58 EP residents out of their money, following a vacation scheme.

Barrington police spoke to a local woman who said she had paid Mr. DeBarros $6,000 to replace her home's heating system. The woman allegedly told police the contractor had completed some other work in her home, but never replaced the heating system. She said she later hired another company to replace the heating system.

Police are still investigating.

In Oct. 2019, East Providence Police Department charged Mr. DeBarros with obtaining money under false pretenses and unlawful appropriation after he allegedly arranged a phony vacation for 58 people and collected $1,000 from each person. Police said Mr. DeBarros never planned on booking any trip. Mr. DeBarros allegedly told detectives that he used the money to pay bills and make purchases for his own good.
