Skippers shut out Townies, 35-0

EAST PROVIDENCE — Things didn’t start well for the East Providence High School football team in its Division I home contest against North Kingstown Saturday afternoon, Oct. 5, at Pierce Memorial Stadium and things didn’t end well for the Townies either as the visiting Skippers handed the locals a one-sided 35-0 defeat.

North Kingstown overwhelmed the Townies in all aspects of the game while improving to 2-1 in the A side of the Division I standings. East Providence fell to 1-2 in the same half of the league. The N.K. game was moved from its scheduled Friday night spot to Saturday due to the lingering EEE virus threat.

Following a penalty on East Providence during the initial kickoff, North Kingstown gained five yards and more importantly Edward Cardarelli took the ensuing reboot back 75 yards all the way for a touchdown. The point-after kick by Max Rome gave the Skippers a 7-0 lead they would only build upon the rest of the first half.

North Kingstown’s defense turned the Townies over on downs to end East Providence’s first offensive series of the day. A handful of players later, the Skippers finished off a 65-yard drive with a 10-yard James Osmanski touchdown pass to Matt Reilly. Rome’s kick made it 14-0 Skippers with only seven minutes gone by.

North Kingstown again came up with a turnover to stop East Providence’s next possession, which led to the third TD for the Skippers. This time it came during the run of play, an interception by Reilly of a Justin Pena pass inside the Townies’ half of the field.

A quick-strike pass by Osmanski put North Kingstown on the verge of the endzone at the E.P. one. On the next play, the Skippers converted the turnover into a score on a one-yard run by Cardarelli. Rome’s third PAT made it 21-0 North Kingstown with 2:43 left in the opening period.

The Skippers added their fourth TD midway through the second period, an eight yard run by Cardarelli. Rome made the score 28-0 North Kingstown with his fourth convert of the day.

North Kingstown’s fifth score later in the quarter made the spread 35-0 at the break. Despite being leveled by the clean hit of E.P. lineman Isaiah Andino just as he was releasing the ball, Osmanski was still able to loft an accurate pass to his receiver Reilly in the corner of the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown. Rome’s PAT proved the final points of the half and of the game.

The only highlights for the Townies, really, came on two fumble recoveries. William Ferro jumped on a strip of a North Kingstown runner, then Adam Martins-Carroll gobbled up a muffed punt by the Skippers.

Other than that, North Kingstown was the aggressor at both points of the line of scrimmage. Its defense gave little space to the E.P. rushing game. Pena’s most effective throws were on the perimeter though at the sidelines, which the Skippers utilized as an extra defender. And as shown in its quick strike capabilities, the N.K. offense executed with near precision.

North Kingstown’s performance shouldn’t have come as a surprise to keen observers. Last week, the Skippers took state power Hendricken to the wire before losing by a touchdown and a conversion, 42-34. The Townies have now lost two in a row after dropping their league game to Cumberland last week after beating St. Raphael in their D-I opener.

East Providence returns to action Friday night, Oct. 11, against winless Cranston East at Cranston Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The 0-3 Thunderbolts lost to St. Ray’s last weekend, 7-3.
