EAST PROVIDENCE — The repair, renovation and restoration of the Pierce Memorial Stadium/Field Complex has been an ongoing concern of residents in recent years, and parts of it are once again on the minds of the administration and the council as they ponder allocations in the proposed Fiscal Year 2019-20 capital improvement portion of East Providence’s operating budget.

Mayor Bob DaSilva has proposed $250,000 earmarked for replacing and expanding the existing basketball court footprint, which would see the four courts fixed and the two tennis courts replaced by ones for hoops. Another $45,000 would be set aside to replace the scoreboard and sound system at the baseball diamond. And $75,000 would be delegated to erect a pavilion with a gazebo.

The council was scheduled to express its opinion on the Pierce Complex proposals during one of its non-binding workshops and formal public hearing on the budget this week.

The construction happening at the moment at Pierce was approved by the previously seated council as part of $4.235 million set aside in the FY18-19 capital budget.

The current work being done was designated to make the stadium more readily compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, calling for the laying of new, wider cement walkways and improved access to restrooms.

In addition, the expenditure at Pierce called for the installation of new perimeter fencing along the main gate of entry, where as many as five picnic tables will be placed when done as a way of enhancing the aesthetics of the grassy area just inside the entrance.

Also of note, monies set aside last year to replace the backstop and fencing on the outside of the baseball field were included in the FY18-19 expenditure. A Request for Proposal from contractors bidding on the work was recently issued, with an anticipated completion date of at least prior to the start of play in the spring of 2020.
