Letter: Review commission receives rousing support

Posted

To the editor:
This past election brought us many new beginnings, both nationally and locally. We have a new president, senators, representatives, school committee members and a new requirement to review our Charter for the City of East Providence on a more consistent basis.

This new revision seemed to be a welcomed change by the people of East Providence. With 19,195 votes cast for this Charter measure, the people of East Providence spoke, passing with a 67.4% approval rate.

Our current charter will be reviewed periodically, (once every eight years), by a commission consisting of residents representing the City. They will be hard working, tax paying, every day people who want to see our City’s laws to be fair, equitable and with the full intention as a vessel for the people. We have welcomed a new day that the City of East Providence be a city of the people by the people and have begun to leave political interests and favors in our rear view mirror.

This measure was a pivotal start of a better tomorrow, providing autonomy to change our local laws as we grow and thrive as a community.

I want to thank my colleagues who supported me with this effort: Council President Britto, Council Vice President Rodericks, Councilwoman Sousa and Councilman Cahoon. With the help of our Assistant City Solicitor, Dylan Conley, I presented this piece of legislation to the City Council this summer and it unanimously passed. It was confirmed by the Board of Canvassing for the City of East Providence with a 2-1 vote and then placed on the ballot. I am proud to say that the overwhelming response of the voters is a glimpse of a new hope and direction for our City.

Thank you to those who took the time to vote and produced a new record for voter turnout in our City.

Amidst what this year has brought us, we came together and looked forward with hope and not despair towards the future of our great city we all call home.

Councilor, Ward 4
