Letter: Please support your church in this time of crisis

As a member of many organizations, I receive invoices via my mail carrier to continue my membership. Often these invoices ask for additional funds at my discretion to help with building maintenance, a plaque, or a donation for a specific cause.  I pay the “dues” invoice and usually add in some special cause funds to help the organization accomplish a specific goal because I am proud to be a member. I am willing to help the organization sustain itself with my membership dues and a special cause contribution.

We have been ordered by our Governor not to congregate in the best interest of everyone’s health, but what about the financial health of our religious organizations.  Many of us have weekly donation envelopes which we are unable to use, if we can not attend.  Remember, the church continues to depend on your support to pay for utilities, upkeep, maintenance, heat, support staff, personalized donation envelopes and other items.  Why not contribute to your church when you get your income tax refund. I am sure you want your church to be available for baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals and other events that many times involve your entire family.

Many churches in our area have a membership list of 200 to 1500 families.  Can you imagine how well your church would operate if every member family contributed $500 a year. This support would help sustain the life of the church of which you are a proud member. The amount of $500 a year equates to only about $10 per week to help the church sustain its life and meet its obligations.

I know many already do support their church. Members should realize that running a church requires income, usually in the form of a collection or a contribution, in order to pay the expenses that every successful organization has.  If you do not attend, the collection will not support the expenses, so why not make a contribution and help support the organization of which you are a member.

Finally, thank you for taking a moment to read my thoughts. Thank you to all who support the many successful organizations in our communities. Thank you to those families who contribute and the families that contribute more. Thank you to those who do the best they can and please know that your support is always very much appreciated.
