To make R.I. more affordable for retirees, government needs more oversight and opportunity.
According to a recent WalletHub ranking, Rhode Island ranks lowest as the worst state for retirees. To improve this, several policies can make living in the Ocean State more affordable. First, Rhode Island needs to end taxing on pensions and Social Security benefits. Currently, Rhode Island is one of only 13 states that continues this practice. As a result, retirees cannot afford to live in the Ocean State.
Secondly, creating the Office of Inspector General could help to identify wasteful spending, investigate crimes involving public funds, identify fraud, and abuse of funds. Establishing this position could bring us a step closer in ensuring that government funds are properly spent.
As a state representative, I would work to establish the position of Inspector General in order to improve the conditions for seniors and retirees by reducing their current tax burden.
