Central office administrator from Delaware will start tenure in late February

EAST PROVIDENCE — Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sandra Forand announced Monday afternoon, Feb. 6, Dr. Julie Giangiulio has been chosen as the new principal at Riverside Middle School.

Giangiulio is currently the Supervisor of Student Services for the Red Clay Consolidated School District in Wilmington, Delaware. She previously spent eight years as principal of two elementary level buildings, West Seaford Elementary and East Dover. She has also served as an assistant principal. In the classroom, she was a kindergarten/elementary teacher.

“We are excited to have her join the East Providence administrative team,” Forand said of Giangiulio, adding the new principal “is excited to bring her passion and experience to East Providence to serve the students and families of Riverside Middle School.”

Giangiulio replaces Rob Perry, who last month resigned from the position to become the city side Director of Human Resources in the administration of East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva.

Perry officially stepped away from his principal duties on January 30. Giangiulio will take over the position on Monday, Feb. 27. Mike Kirkutis, a physical education teacher at RMS and a former administrator, has been serving as interim principal since Perry’s departure. He will continue to do so until Giangiulio comes on board.

The district put together a hiring committee representing the Riverside Middle School community that screened initial applicants, then conducted interviews last week. Forand said the goal of the exercise was to appoint the candidate the committee put forward as soon as possible.

Over 20 applications were received. Five candidates were recommended to the committee to be interviewed, four accepted and went through the process. Forand said Giangiulio was “unanimously selected” by the panel as the applicant proposed to be hired for the position.

“Dr. Giangiulio brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience closely aligned to the goals of the district and RMS,” Forand added. “She is an innovative leader who believes in collaborative decision making. She has proven success in developing and implementing systems with staff to meet the diverse needs of learners.

According to the district, Giangiulio has a degree in Early Childhood Education, a Master’s in Reading and a doctorate in Educational Leadership. Her current work focuses on Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Social Emotional Learning initiatives, grant writing and behavior and mental health support for her district, of which Forand said, “All of those areas will contribute greatly to her role as principal.”

Giangiulio has three grown daughters, one of whom lives in Rhode Island and is expecting her first child, which is a key reason why she aspired to make the move north, Forand noted.
