EAST PROVIDENCE — At least a week before its stated goal, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation and its partners completed two bypass lanes headed west on the east side of the Washington Bridge in time for the afternoon rush Friday, Dec. 15.
The lanes were necessary because of RIDOT's controversial decision to shut down entirely the westbound side of the structurally deficient 55-year-old bridge earlier in the week, a move that created traffic chaos on and around the streets of East Providence.
RIDOT Director Peter Alviti initially estimated it would take between a week to two to create the bypass lanes on the easterly pass. However, the day prior on Thursday, Dec. 14, he amended the time frame significantly to the weekend and potentially December 15 because of unexpected easy access to materials and manpower needed to perform the alterations.
