PAWTUCKET — It was a busy first day for the Rumford Little League Senior Baseball Division All-Stars in the 2019 Rhode Island State Tournament at Tomlinson Field as the locals split a doubleheader to remain alive in the event.

Rumford fell to South Kingstown, 5-4, earlier Sunday afternoon, July 7, but defeated Cumberland American, 6-2, in the nightcap to keep its hopes alive. The locals face S.K. in a rematch Tuesday night, July 9, back at Tomlinson Field at 6:30 in the losers’ bracket final.

Elmwood awaits the Rumford-S.K. winner in the championship round. The District 1 winners defeated Cumberland, 14-1, and S.K., 6-1, to reach the state finals.

Rumford’s opening game, scheduled for Saturday night, July 6, was postponed due to rain, forcing the locals to begin states the following afternoon against District 3 winner South Kingstown The locals then waited through the Elmwood-S.K. game before playing Cumberland later Sunday night.
