EAST PROVIDENCE — Yusef Abdullah scored three touchdowns, including the game-winning tally off an interception late in the contest, leading the East Providence High School football team to a 26-22 win over visiting Barrington Tuesday night, Nov. 16, in a non-league game for both sides held at the new stadium.
As a running back on offense, Abdullah accounted for touchdown runs of three and 49 yards. And on defense as a cornerback, his “pick six” for a 45-yard touchdown off Barrington quarterback James Anderson in the fourth quarter put the Townies ahead for good.
Abdullah stepped in front of a quick slant pass attempt by the Barrington QB to the wide side of the field on 3-and-8, easily snaring the ball and returning it untouched for the TD with around 3 minutes, 30 seconds left in the game.
Max Whiting had the other score for EPHS, running a quarterback keeper in to touch from 12 yards out.
The win was third for the Townies overall in nine games this fall and avenged an earlier loss to the Eagles. Barrington defeated EPHS, 7-6, in the first varsity football game played at the new stadium back in early September.
The Townies have one game remaining on their 2021 schedule, a trip to Providence on Thanksgiving Day for their annual clash with rival LaSalle at the Rams Cimini Field November 25 at 10 a.m.
